Tollhouse! A Close Shave!

King John, produced in 1899 by the pioneering British filmmaker Walter R. Booth for the Robert W. Paul company, stands as one of the earliest examples of a narrative film attempting to adapt historical theater for the screen. It was created during a period when cinema was transitioning from simple 'actualities'—short clips of real-life events—toward staged dramatic performances, reflecting the industry's desire to lend legitimacy to the medium by drawing from established Shakespearean traditions.

The film represents an early experiment in theatrical staging, utilizing a limited frame to capture what was essentially a filmed play. While primitive by modern standards, its design was intentional in trying to bridge the gap between Victorian-era stagecraft and the burgeoning language of moving pictures. It was received as a novelty curiosity by audiences of the time, serving as a significant technical stepping stone in the development of early British silent cinema.
