Where it came from
Released in 1940, Fantasia stands as a landmark achievement in animation, conceived by Walt Disney as a way to revitalize the character of Mickey Mouse through a high-concept feature film. Originally titled The Concert Feature, the project evolved into an experimental collaboration between Disney and conductor Leopold Stokowski, intended to visualize classical music through abstract and narrative-driven animation segments.
The film was produced at a time of immense creative ambition for the Disney studio, featuring the debut of Fantasound, an early form of stereophonic sound that sought to immerse the audience in the orchestral arrangements. While the film initially struggled at the box office due to high production costs and the onset of World War II, it was later recognized as a pioneering work of art that fundamentally changed the relationship between music and visual storytelling.
