Voyage de M. le Président Félix Faure en Russie (Août 1897): Arrivée du président et du Czar à Peterhof

The 1897 collection of films refers to the early era of cinematography, a period characterized by the pioneering work of figures such as the Lumière brothers and Georges Méliès. During this time, motion pictures were largely experimental short features, often under one minute in length, capturing everyday scenes or simple stage-like narratives. These films were produced during the infancy of the medium, primarily intended for exhibition in vaudeville houses, penny arcades, and traveling shows to demonstrate the technical wonder of moving images.

The design and production of these films were dictated by the mechanical limitations of early cameras, which were cumbersome and relied on hand-cranked mechanisms. Cinematographers often functioned as both directors and engineers, focusing on capturing authentic movement or staging theatrical illusions within a fixed, wide-angle frame. While received as a novelty curiosity by Victorian-era audiences, these works laid the essential technical and conceptual foundation for the narrative film language that would develop over the following decades.
