Where it came from
Backlight was released as part of the ST-11 Uta Starter Deck in the One Piece Card Game, which hit shelves in 2024 to coincide with the multimedia expansion surrounding the film One Piece Film: Red. The card is based on the film's signature musical sequences, specifically serving as a thematic representation of Uta's character and her role as a world-famous singer whose performances possess the ability to alter reality. By incorporating these musical motifs, the design aims to translate the cinematic intensity of the movie into the strategic, tempo-based gameplay of the card game.
The artistic direction for this event card emphasizes the vibrant, high-energy visual style associated with the 'New Genesis' aesthetic of the film. Designers sought to create a mechanic that reflects the disruption and momentum characteristic of Uta's character cards, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield in a manner that mirrors the chaotic, musical nature of her film appearances. Upon its release, the deck was widely received as a highly accessible entry point for new players, praised for its cohesive synergy and the integration of popular music-themed art.
