Provenance

Where it came from

The Chessmarimo card was released in the -TWO LEGENDS- [OP-08] booster set for the One Piece Card Game, which debuted in 2024. This set draws heavily from the Thriller Bark arc of the series, focusing on the eccentric characters encountered by the Straw Hat crew on their journey through the Florian Triangle. The card depicts a Chessmarimo, one of the many bizarre zombies created by Dr. Hogback, known for its distinct split-body design and its role as a soldier under the command of Warlord Gecko Moria.

The design of the card leans into the Gothic-horror aesthetic that defines the Thriller Bark storyline. Illustrators for the set emphasized the marionette-like qualities of the Chessmarimo to reflect its origins as a construct of medical science and shadow-puppetry. Within the competitive landscape of the game, this card is primarily utilized for its specific synergy with other Thriller Bark-themed characters, serving as a functional piece for players building thematic decks around the Moria archetype.
