Where it came from
Dr. Hogback, card OP15-084, was introduced as part of the Adventure on Kami's Island set for the One Piece Card Game. This set draws its thematic inspiration from the Thriller Bark story arc, a gothic-inspired segment of the series centered around the enigmatic surgeon Hogback. The character is portrayed as a brilliant but morally bankrupt medical genius, and the card design captures his unsettling, theatrical presence within the game's strategic mechanics.
The card was designed to reflect Hogback's role as a necromancer of sorts, emphasizing his ability to interact with the graveyard or trash pile in game terminology. Illustrators aimed to capture his signature wide-eyed, manic expression and distinctive aesthetic, which draws heavily from classic mad scientist tropes. Upon its release, the card became a functional staple for players utilizing Thriller Bark-themed decks, appreciated for how well its mechanical function aligns with the character's narrative tendency to manipulate the dead.
