Where it came from
Viola (EB01-052) was released as part of the Memorial Collection (EB01) for the One Piece Card Game, a set designed to revisit and celebrate iconic characters and moments from the series' history. This specific card features alternate art, a rarity tier highly sought after by collectors for its unique aesthetic and stylistic departure from the standard card design.
The card depicts Viola from the Dressrosa arc, capturing her complex role as an assassin and princess. The alternate art version utilizes a distinctive illustrative style intended to highlight the emotional depth of the character, moving away from the more action-oriented stills found in the base set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by both competitive players for its utility in gameplay and collectors who value the high-quality character portraiture.
The One Piece Card Game design philosophy emphasizes thematic accuracy to Eiichiro Oda’s source material, with the art team collaborating closely to ensure that special variant cards like this one honor the visual language of the manga. The design for this alternate art piece is noted for its clean composition and use of color, reflecting the specific tonal shifts of the Dressrosa narrative arc.
