Where it came from
The Aerodactyl card from the Dark Explorers expansion was released in May 2012 as part of the wider Black & White series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was notable for introducing a significant number of Pokémon-EX cards and focused heavily on the mechanics introduced in the Generation V video games, specifically the Black 2 and White 2 titles. The Aerodactyl card, numbered 53/108, was designed to fit into the competitive landscape of the era, leveraging the Fighting-type archetype to counter specific popular meta decks.
The artwork for this card was created by Kouki Saitou, a long-standing illustrator for the Pokémon TCG known for his dynamic character poses and clean, vibrant aesthetic. Saitou’s depiction of Aerodactyl emphasizes the prehistoric, predatory nature of the Fossil Pokémon, framing it within the aggressive visual style that characterized the Black & White era's card designs. Upon release, the set was well-received by players for its impact on the rotation and remains a nostalgic point of reference for collectors who favor the early 2010s era of the game.
