Arbok

The Arbok card numbered 176/162, released in the 2024 Scarlet & Violet—Temporal Forces expansion, represents a modern interpretation of the classic Poison-type Pokémon. As part of the Illustration Rare subset, the card moves away from standard game-art aesthetics to prioritize a more atmospheric, narrative-driven scene. The design was handled by illustrator Dajiro Okamoto, whose work typically focuses on earthy textures and a sense of naturalistic isolation, contrasting the typical high-action combat poses found in other cards within the set.

This particular card belongs to the wider Illustration Rare initiative introduced in the Scarlet & Violet series, which aims to elevate the aesthetic quality of card collecting by featuring artistic, full-frame interpretations by individual illustrators. Arbok was chosen as a featured subject for its iconic silhouette, allowing the artist to emphasize the snake’s coiled, intimidating presence against a backdrop that highlights its venomous nature. The card was well-received by collectors for its moody color palette and the deliberate choice of a non-standard artistic perspective.
