Azumarill δ

Released in October 2005 as part of the Pokémon TCG EX Delta Species expansion, this card represents the unique Delta Species mechanic that dominated the mid-2000s meta. The set introduced the concept of Delta Species Pokémon, which were Pokémon found in the Holon region that had undergone a biological mutation, resulting in them possessing types different from their typical Pokedex entries. This particular Azumarill trades its standard Water typing for a Lightning type, reflecting the experimental, lore-driven shift that sought to revitalize the competitive card game by complicating type matchups.

The artwork for this card was executed by illustrator Midori Harada, a prolific artist in the Pokémon TCG scene. Her design emphasizes the creature’s altered state, placing it in a dynamic, electrical environment that visually reinforces the mechanical shift to the Lightning type. Upon release, the set was well-received by players for adding strategic depth to deck construction, as it allowed trainers to integrate familiar Pokémon into elemental strategies that were previously impossible, effectively bridging the gap between established fan favorites and complex competitive viability.
