Provenance

Where it came from

The Berry card was released in 2000 as part of the Neo Genesis expansion, the first set in the Neo series that introduced Pokémon from the Johto region to the trading card game. Serving as a Trainer card, it provided a simple yet practical mechanic: drawing a card if the player's Pokémon was holding a Berry item. This set marked a significant transition in the game's mechanics, moving away from the Base Set era toward more complex interactions between items and Pokémon.

The card features artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, a frequent illustrator during the early years of the Pokémon Trading Card Game known for his distinct digital style. Kinebuchi’s depiction of the Berry reflects the early aesthetic of the game, focusing on clean, recognizable item design that adhered to the established visual language of the franchise. Upon its release, it was regarded as a standard utility card, often utilized in casual play to help maintain deck consistency.
