Where it came from
Bill's Maintenance was released as part of the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion in 2004, a set designed to celebrate the remakes of the original Game Boy titles. This card functions as a Supporter, representing the character Bill, the iconic PC storage developer from the Kanto region. In the context of the game's mechanics, the card allows players to shuffle two cards from their hand into their deck to draw three new cards, a strategic utility designed to improve hand consistency during play.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, whose distinctive style defines the visual language of the franchise. By 2004, Sugimori had long established the aesthetic standards for Pokémon characters, opting for a clean, professional, and utilitarian look for Bill. The illustration is widely recognized for its straightforward depiction of the character in his laboratory setting, which resonated with long-term fans by providing a direct link to the nostalgic origins of the Pokémon trading card game.
