What it does

Put a Basic or Evolution card from your hand face down in front of you and tell your opponent the name of an attack of that card. Your opponent guesses the name of that card. Flip the card over. If your opponent guessed right, he or she draws 3 cards. If your opponent guessed wrong, you draw 3 cards. Either way, return the card to your hand.

Provenance

Where it came from

Blaine's Quiz #3 was released as part of the Gym Challenge expansion in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in Japan in 1998 and arrived in English markets in 2000. This set was designed to capture the flavor of the Kanto region's Gym Leaders, and these specific trainer cards were conceptualized as interactive puzzles that required players to mimic the role of the Gym Leader by testing their opponent's knowledge of the game mechanics.

The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, whose distinctive, clean style defined the early aesthetic of the Pokémon franchise. Within the Gym Challenge series, the Quiz cards were a stylistic experiment in meta-game design, intending to break the fourth wall by forcing a direct interaction between players. While they were not staples in competitive tournament decks, they remain highly regarded by collectors for their unique design and their direct tie to the character-driven narrative of the Gym Leader expansion.
