Clamperl

Clamperl, the Bivalve Pokémon, made its debut in the third generation of the Pokémon franchise, first appearing in the 2002 video games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. The character was designed to emphasize its dual-nature evolution, capable of evolving into either Huntail or Gorebyss depending on the held item provided to the player. As a common card in the Destined Rivals set, this illustration captures the creature in its signature sheltered state, reflecting the design philosophy of Ken Sugimori and the team at Creatures Inc., who aimed to balance whimsical character aesthetics with the functional requirements of the Trading Card Game.

The Destined Rivals set functions as part of the broader Sword & Shield or Scarlet & Violet-era distribution cycles that keep staple Pokémon relevant for competitive and casual play. Card 054/182 continues the tradition of featuring Water-type Pokémon with clear, accessible artwork that serves as an entry point for younger players. While common cards like this are produced in high volume to ensure set completion, they remain central to the game's economy, providing the foundational building blocks for deck construction and collection diversity.
