Provenance

Where it came from

The Clefable card from the Expedition Base Set was released in 2002 as part of the first Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion to introduce the e-Reader compatibility feature. This set marked a significant shift in design, incorporating dot-code strips on the side of the cards that allowed players to scan them into a Nintendo Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral to unlock digital data, minigames, or Pokédex entries.

The artwork for this particular card was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, a foundational artist for the Pokémon TCG. Arita’s style for this era favored clean, focused compositions that emphasized the creature’s personality within the new, more technical card layout. While the Expedition set was praised by some collectors for its innovative integration of hardware, the design was also met with mixed reactions due to the cramped text layout necessitated by the e-Reader scanning strips.
