Cyclone Energy

Cyclone Energy was released in 2007 as part of the EX Power Keepers expansion, the final set of the EX era in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set served as a retrospective, featuring reprints and updated mechanics from throughout the EX series, which had been produced by Nintendo following their transition from Wizards of the Coast. As a special energy card, it was designed to provide colorless energy while offering a tactical utility: when attached to a Pokémon, it would force the opponent to switch their active Pokémon with one from their bench.

The card’s design reflects the late-EX era aesthetic, characterized by a clean, functional layout intended to clearly distinguish special energy effects from standard energy cards. While the specific illustrator of this individual card is credited to the design team at Creatures Inc., the art direction for the Power Keepers set focused on a high-contrast style to mark the conclusion of this generation of play. Upon its release, it was regarded by competitive players as a useful tool for disruption, though its reliance on a coin flip or specific conditions in later formats kept it as a niche utility card rather than a centerpiece of the meta.
