Dark Steelix

Dark Steelix was released in the 2004 Team Rocket Returns expansion, a set that revisited the villainous themes of the original Team Rocket series. Following the shift to the EX-series card design, this set reintroduced the concept of Dark Pokémon, which were portrayed as more aggressive, battle-hardened iterations of their standard counterparts. The inclusion of Steelix capitalized on the popularity of the Steel-type introduced in the Johto generation, emphasizing its imposing physical presence within the dark-themed meta of the game.

The artwork for this card, illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, captures the metallic, serpentine form of Steelix with a distinct focus on textures and dramatic lighting. Kimura’s style during this era often utilized high-contrast shading to lean into the 'Dark' aesthetic required by the set's narrative. Upon release, the card was well-regarded by players and collectors alike, both for its striking visual design and its utility in competitive play, where its defensive capabilities and specific typing offered significant advantages in the era's tournament scene.
