Provenance

Where it came from

The Legendary Collection, released in May 2002 by Wizards of the Coast, served as a retrospective set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It was designed to offer players a compilation of the most popular cards from the original Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, and Team Rocket expansions, providing a final hurrah before the license transitioned to Nintendo. The Dark Wartortle card specifically repurposes the artwork from the original Team Rocket set, maintaining the distinctive dark aesthetic that defined that particular expansion.

The illustration was originally provided by Mitsuhiro Arita, a staple artist for the Pokémon TCG since its inception. Arita’s approach for the Dark series focused on more ominous, moody settings to reflect the 'Dark' theme of the Team Rocket organization. When reintroduced in the Legendary Collection, the card became highly recognizable due to the set's signature reverse-holo foil pattern, which featured a fireworks-like etched finish that covered the entire card face, distinguishing it from all previous printings.
