Where it came from
The Empoleon V card (SWSH108) was released in 2021 as part of the Sword & Shield Black Star Promos series. It was specifically included as a foil promo card within the Empoleon V Single Strike Collections, which were designed to introduce the then-new 'Single Strike' mechanic to the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set leaned into the tactical shift of the era, focusing on heavy-hitting attacks that emphasized a high-risk, high-reward playstyle.
The illustration for this card was created by artist NC Empire, who has contributed extensively to the Pokémon TCG. The artwork captures Empoleon in a dynamic, aquatic pose that highlights its steel-type characteristics and regal demeanor. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike for its utility in competitive play, specifically for its 'Emperor's Eyes' ability, which allowed players to shut down the abilities of single-prize Pokémon, making it a staple for control-oriented decks of that period.
