Where it came from
Energy Retrieval was released as a secret rare card in the 2015 Ancient Origins expansion, part of the XY series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. As a gold-bordered secret rare, it stands out from the standard set due to its full-art metallic texture and distinctive aesthetic, which was a hallmark of the premium design direction taken during the mid-2010s to distinguish rare chase cards from the rest of the set list.
The card was illustrated by Toyste Beach, who utilized a clean, minimalist style to depict the item. Rather than featuring a character or creature, the design focuses on the functional iconography of the game itself, elevating a basic trainer card to a collector's piece. Within the competitive community, the card is remembered for its blend of practical utility in deck building and the sought-after prestige that accompanied gold-rarity cards of that era.
