Erika's Bellsprout

Erika's Bellsprout was released as part of the Gym Heroes expansion in the year 2000, which served as the first set in the Pokémon Trading Card Game to focus on the Gym Leaders from the original video games. This card features the Grass-type Pokémon associated with Erika, the Celadon City Gym Leader known for her expertise in Grass-type creatures. The set was designed to capture the personal connection between trainers and their Pokémon, shifting away from standard wild Pokémon to reflect the specific rosters used by iconic Gym Leaders.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. His approach for the Gym Heroes set was to maintain a consistent, clean aesthetic that highlighted the bond between the trainer and the Pokémon, often depicting them in a state of quiet activity or training. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard common entry in the set, appreciated by players for its utility in thematic Grass-type decks that focused on the specific mechanics introduced in the Gym expansion era.
