Where it came from
The Exp. Share card was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's XY—Primal Clash expansion, which debuted in early 2015. This set drew heavy inspiration from the video games Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, focusing on the Primal Reversion of legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre. As a Pokémon Tool card, the Exp. Share is a staple utility item designed to allow a benched Pokémon to gain experience points or, in the context of the card game, move energy cards from a knocked-out active Pokémon to the equipped one, reflecting its original video game mechanic of sharing experience.
The design of the card follows the standard aesthetic established for the XY era, featuring clean, modern typography and functional iconography that differentiates item cards from Pokémon creatures. While specific individual artists for this particular utility card are often part of a wider design team at Creatures Inc., the visual language of the Primal Clash set was highly praised by the community for its consistency and for successfully bridging the transition between the legacy of the Hoenn region games and the contemporary mechanics of the card game.
