The Fighting Energy card from the HeartGold & SoulSilver set, numbered 120/123, was released in early 2010 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's transition into the HGSS series. This set drew its aesthetic and structural inspiration from the Nintendo DS remakes of the classic Game Boy Color titles, HeartGold and SoulSilver. The design of these basic energy cards sought to integrate the rustic, traditional Japanese art style of the Johto region games, featuring a minimalist aesthetic that focused on the core elemental symbols rather than the intricate character illustrations found on Pokémon cards.

The design team for the HGSS series aimed to provide a cleaner, more cohesive visual language that reflected the nostalgic tone of the Johto narrative. By shifting to a simplified, high-contrast graphic representation of the Fighting-type symbol—a stylized rock-fist icon—the card served as a functional centerpiece for deck building while grounding the player in the set's thematic setting.
