Flaaffy

The Flaaffy card from the Expedition Base Set, released in 2002, serves as a significant marker in the history of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was the first to introduce the e-Card technology, which featured data dots on the card borders that could be scanned by the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral. This experimental design shift aimed to bridge the gap between physical card play and digital gameplay, allowing players to unlock small games, Pokédex entries, and special effects by scanning their collection.

The card artwork was illustrated by Atsuko Nishida, an influential designer who is perhaps best known as the original character designer of Pikachu. Her illustration style for this set maintains the clean, approachable aesthetic that defined the early era of Pokémon. While the Expedition set received mixed reactions from players at the time due to the complexity of the e-Reader integration and the non-standard card layout, it is now viewed as an important collector's item for its unique place in the transition toward the modern era of the game.
