Gambler

Gambler was released as part of the Fossil expansion, the second major set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in North America in late 1999. Following the success of the Base Set and the Jungle expansion, Fossil was designed to introduce the ancient Pokémon species discovered in the Kanto region. The set was produced by Wizards of the Coast and aimed to expand gameplay variety by including new Trainer cards that emphasized risk and resource management, such as the Gambler card, which forced players to rely on the flip of a coin to determine their draw power.

The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori utilized his signature watercolor-influenced style to depict a character engaged in a high-stakes card game, perfectly aligning with the card's mechanic of testing one's luck. Upon its release, Gambler was received as a utilitarian if unpredictable tool in competitive play, often relegated to casual decks due to its reliance on chance rather than the consistent card advantage provided by cards like Professor Oak or Bill.
