Where it came from
Released in May 2003, the Gligar card from the Skyridge expansion represents the final main expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game produced by Wizards of the Coast before the license transitioned to The Pokémon Company. Skyridge was designed to integrate with the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral, which allowed players to scan dot-code strips on the cards to unlock mini-games and Pokédex entries, marking a high-tech experimental phase in the game's evolution.
The artwork for this card was provided by Kouki Saitou, a prolific illustrator who has contributed extensively to the TCG. Saitou’s depiction of Gligar emphasizes the creature’s distinct scorpion-like anatomy and hovering posture, adhering to the stylistic standards of the e-Card era. As a common card within the set, it was intended primarily for deck-building utility, though its inclusion in the final Wizards-produced set has since rendered it a notable piece of history for collectors documenting the transition between game eras.
