Where it came from
Released in September 2002, the Expedition Base Set marked a significant shift for the Pokémon Trading Card Game as the first North American expansion to feature the e-Reader technology. This integration allowed players to scan cards through a Game Boy Advance peripheral to unlock digital minigames, Pokédex data, and battle animations. The design transitioned away from the original Base Set aesthetic, introducing a new layout that incorporated a scannable dot-code strip along the left side of the card, which necessitated a smaller image window for the featured creature.
The artwork for this particular Goldeen was created by Kagemaru Himeno, a long-standing illustrator for the Pokémon franchise known for her clean, expressive depictions of Pokémon in their natural habitats. In this piece, Himeno captures Goldeen mid-swim in a vibrant, aquatic setting, maintaining the character's signature elegant silhouette despite the restricted frame imposed by the e-Reader card design. Like many common cards from this era, it served primarily as a foundational element for gameplay, helping to flesh out the Water-type roster for the Expedition block.
