Provenance

Where it came from

The Grimer card from the Team Rocket expansion was released in Japan in 1997 and internationally by Wizards of the Coast in 2000. This set marked a significant departure from the standard Base Set, introducing the concept of Dark Pokémon and focusing on the antagonistic Team Rocket organization. As a common card in this series, it served to flesh out the thematic roster of the expansion, representing the grimy, polluted aesthetic associated with the villains of the Kanto region.

The artwork for this card was provided by Ken Sugimori, one of the primary illustrators and character designers for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for the Team Rocket set often leaned into a slightly grittier, more expressive tone to match the series' darker narrative shift. The card was well-received by players and collectors at the time as an accessible piece of a set that introduced more complex game mechanics, such as the Dark Pokémon evolution line, which significantly influenced the competitive landscape of the early trading card game.
