Provenance

Where it came from

The Hippopotas card from the Majestic Dawn expansion was released by The Pokémon Company in 2008 as part of the Diamond & Pearl Series. This set was designed to integrate Pokémon from the Sinnoh region into the trading card game, reflecting the aesthetic shift toward more modern, high-contrast digital illustration styles that defined the era. As a common card, it served as a foundational element for deck building, providing players with a basic Fighting-type entry point that showcased the creature's desert-dwelling characteristics.

The artwork for this specific card was rendered by illustrator Kouki Saitou, a long-time contributor to the franchise known for a clean, expressive style. Saitou captured Hippopotas in a desert environment, focusing on the distinct, rugged texture of its skin and its signature sand-expelling behavior. The design was well-received by players for its consistency and readability, reinforcing the standard visual language established for the Diamond & Pearl card sets which favored dynamic poses against simplified backgrounds.
