Where it came from
The Hypno card (51/122) was released in 2016 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion titled BREAKpoint. This set was designed to introduce the BREAK Evolution mechanic, which featured cards with horizontal orientations that could be placed atop a base Pokémon to grant them increased HP and a new attack or ability. The expansion drew its aesthetic and mechanical inspiration from the Pokémon X and Y video games, focusing on the encroaching influence of the 'Rough Seas' and the clash between two parallel worlds.
The artwork for this specific card was rendered by artist match, who has contributed extensively to the Pokémon TCG. Known for a clean, digital style, match focused on capturing Hypno's signature hypnotic pendulum and eerie, psychic-oriented demeanor. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard rare within the set, serving as a functional piece for psychic-type decks of the era rather than a high-value collector's trophy, reflecting the game's shift toward the then-new BREAK and EX card mechanics.
