Imakuni?

The Imakuni? card is a playful tribute to Tomoaki Imakuni, a multi-faceted creator at Creatures Inc. who has long been synonymous with the Pokémon franchise's eccentricity. Originally appearing in the Japanese Pokémon Card Game as a promotional card, this specific iteration was released in the 2016 Generations set, which was created to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the franchise. The card design itself is purposefully absurd, featuring a caricature of Imakuni? created by the artist Kagemaru Himeno, capturing his signature look and whimsical persona that has endeared him to fans of the series since its inception.

The design of the card leans heavily into the meta-humor inherent in the Pokémon trading card world. By featuring Imakuni? as a Trainer card that forces the player to act like him—specifically to sing or act out the part of the character—the card serves as a humorous departure from the competitive rigidity of standard play. It was received by the community as a beloved inside joke, reflecting the lighthearted culture of the Japanese game developers and providing a rare, memorable break from the intense strategies found in typical deck-building.
