Koga's Tangela

Released in the year 2000 as part of the Gym Challenge expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, this card represents the specialized roster of Koga, the Fuchsia City Gym Leader. The expansion was designed to bridge the gap between the game’s competitive mechanics and the lore of the Pokémon anime and video games, allowing players to utilize Pokémon trained by prominent Gym Leaders. By focusing on specific character archetypes, the set offered a thematic shift from the original base sets, emphasizing the strategic partnership between trainers and their grass-type companions.

The artwork for this specific card was executed by Ken Sugimori, one of the primary illustrators and character designers for the Pokémon franchise. His work during this era is characterized by clean lines and a clear, functional aesthetic intended to make the creatures immediately recognizable to fans of the Game Boy titles. While Tangela is a common-rarity card within the set, it remains a notable example of Sugimori’s classic style, contributing to the cohesive visual identity that helped define the early years of the global Pokémon card phenomenon.
