Where it came from
The Lapras card, numbered 28/122, was released in the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion titled BREAKpoint, which debuted in early 2016. This set was part of the XY series, a period marked by the introduction of the BREAK evolution mechanic, which allowed cards to be placed horizontally atop existing Pokémon to increase their HP and grant new abilities. As a standard uncommon card, this iteration of Lapras served as a reliable water-type utility piece during the competitive meta of the time, designed to provide players with accessible, straightforward card drawing capabilities.
The illustration was rendered by Mizue, a long-time contributor to the Pokémon TCG known for a soft, painterly aesthetic that highlights the serene nature of water-type creatures. The art depicts Lapras gliding through a calm sea, capturing the creature's gentle and transportive qualities that fans have associated with the species since its introduction in the Generation I video games. Within the BREAKpoint set, the card was positioned to help players stabilize their decks, reflecting the design philosophy of the XY era to balance complex new mechanics with functional, foundational cards.
