Released in 2002, the Expedition Base Set marked a significant transition for the Pokémon Trading Card Game in Western markets. It was the first English set to integrate the e-Reader technology, which allowed players to scan dot-codes on the cards using a Game Boy Advance peripheral to access mini-games, Pokédex entries, and special items. This shift reflected Nintendo's broader strategy at the time to bridge the gap between their handheld console ecosystem and the collectible card game.

The card features artwork by Naoyo Kimura, who established a distinct, often playful visual style during the early 2000s era of the game. As a common Fighting-type card, this Larvitar depicts the Rock Skin Pokémon in a relatively simple, grounded posture that emphasizes its signature earthen aesthetic. Because this was a standard entry in the massive 165-card set, it was widely distributed among players and collectors, serving as a functional building block for decks during the early e-Card generation.
