Provenance

Where it came from

The Lt. Surge card was released in 2000 as part of the Gym Heroes expansion, the first English set to focus on the Pokémon Gym Leaders. This set was designed to capture the tactical depth of the Gym Leader battles from the original video games, featuring cards that reflected the personality and fighting style of specific Kanto region leaders. Lt. Surge, representing the Vermilion City Gym, was depicted as a rugged, militaristic figure, fitting the established lore of him being a former soldier.

The card artwork was produced by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for the Gym Heroes set emphasized a more cinematic, action-oriented approach to the characters compared to earlier releases, aiming to highlight the unique bond between the trainer and their chosen type. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability-focused gameplay mechanics, which rewarded the use of Electric-type synergy within the card game's evolving meta.
