Where it came from
The Lugia card from the Aquapolis expansion, released in 2003, represents a significant moment in the transition between the Wizards of the Coast era and the Pokémon Company International era of the trading card game. As the final set released by Wizards of the Coast in North America, Aquapolis introduced the E-Reader mechanic, a technology that allowed players to scan cards through a Game Boy Advance peripheral to unlock mini-games and additional data. The set is highly regarded among collectors for its distinct, minimalist frame design, which was intended to maximize the visibility of the intricate artwork.
The illustration for this specific Lugia was created by Kouki Saitou, a prominent artist whose work defines much of the early 2000s aesthetic for the franchise. The card is classified as a secret-rare, indicated by its numbering exceeding the standard set count of 147. Due to its status as a high-tier chase card in a set with a relatively limited print run compared to earlier expansions, it remains a cornerstone piece for enthusiasts of the E-Reader series, valued for both its challenging acquisition and its stylistic departure from traditional card designs.
