Provenance

Where it came from

The Machamp card from the Base Set was released in 1999 as part of the initial wave of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in North America. Unlike other holographic cards in the set, this card was uniquely included in the two-player starter set as a fixed promotional insert, making it arguably the most ubiquitous holographic card from the original print run.

The artwork was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. His aesthetic focused on dynamic, clean lines intended to clearly communicate the creature's Fighting-type nature. While the card is iconic for its presence in early starter kits, its widespread availability in these decks eventually led to it being considered less rare among serious collectors than other holographic cards from the same base series.
