Provenance

Where it came from

The Magcargo card from the Skyridge expansion was released in 2003 as part of the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set is particularly notable for being the last to incorporate the e-Reader technology, which allowed players to scan dot-codes on the cards into a Game Boy Advance to unlock special features and mini-games. Magcargo H16/144 features the distinctive Crystal-type aesthetic often associated with the era's specialized holo-rares, reflecting a period of transition as the license prepared to move fully under The Pokémon Company International.

The artwork for this card was created by Kouki Saitou, an illustrator known for a clean, dynamic style that defined much of the aesthetic for early-to-mid-2000s Pokémon cards. In this design, Magcargo is captured in a lava-like flow, emphasizing its Fire-type nature and rugged, crystalline shell. As one of the 'Holo' cards in the Skyridge set, it remains highly sought after by collectors today, not only for its gameplay utility during its competitive run but also for its status as a representative of the final collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Nintendo.
