Where it came from
The Master Ball card was released as part of the Gym Challenge expansion, which debuted in Japan in 2000 and reached international markets in October 2000. As the final set in the original Wizards of the Coast Gym series, it was designed to showcase the signature Pokémon and signature items belonging to the Kanto region's eight Gym Leaders. The set served as a narrative bridge between the established gameplay of the base set and the more specialized, character-driven mechanics of the Gym series.
The artwork for this specific Trainer card was produced by Ken Sugimori, whose minimalist and iconic style defines the visual language of the franchise. By focusing on the distinctive purple color palette and the unique 'M' motif of the Master Ball, the design emphasizes its status as the most powerful containment device in the game lore. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in competitive play for its ability to search the deck for any Pokémon, maintaining its reputation as a utility staple for trainers building their collections.
