Provenance

Where it came from

The Metal Energy card was introduced to the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the Expedition Base Set, released in 2002. It marked a significant evolution for the game, as it was the first time basic Energy cards featured specialized holographic treatments and were officially designated as rare cards within a set, moving away from the standard, non-holo energy cards found in starter decks.

The design of this card reflected the transition of the game's art direction under the e-Reader era, which integrated digital compatibility with the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. While many cards in this era were illustrated by various artists, the Energy cards maintained a clean, industrial aesthetic meant to emphasize the distinct elemental types. The card was well-received by players for its aesthetic upgrade and collectible appeal as a sought-after staple for competitive deck building.
