Where it came from
The Mewtwo δ card, released in 2005 as part of the EX Delta Species expansion, represents a notable departure from the Pokémon Trading Card Game's established elemental mechanics. During this era, The Pokémon Company introduced the 'Delta Species' concept to explain variations in Pokémon behavior and biology, suggesting that electromagnetic waves in the Holon region caused these creatures to adopt different elemental types. Consequently, this specific Mewtwo iteration deviates from its traditional Psychic typing to become a Fire-type, offering unique strategic advantages in gameplay by allowing it to exploit weaknesses of Grass and Steel-type Pokémon.
The artwork for this card was crafted by illustrator Masakazu Fukuda, who utilized a distinct digital style characteristic of the mid-2000s era of the game. Fukuda emphasized the experimental, artificial nature of Mewtwo by placing the legendary figure against a backdrop that highlights its metallic or crystalline transformation. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its versatility and remains a significant piece of TCG history for those documenting the transition into the creative, type-shifting mechanics that defined the Delta Species sets.
