Provenance

Where it came from

The Mightyena card (18/108) was released in the 2007 Power Keepers expansion, the final set of the EX Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set is notable for featuring re-releases of popular Pokémon-ex from previous eras, set within the context of the Hoenn region's Team Magma and Team Aqua narrative. It served as a bridge between the older mechanics of the EX era and the upcoming Diamond and Pearl series, aiming to provide players with powerful, late-cycle options for their decks.

The artwork for this card was created by Kouki Saitou, a long-standing illustrator for the Pokémon franchise known for his dynamic character poses and clean, accessible style. For this specific entry, Saitou emphasizes Mightyena's role as a predatory, wolf-like Pokémon, utilizing shadows and a grounded stance to reflect its Darkness type. Upon release, the card was received as a standard rare, primarily valued by collectors for its completionist utility within the set and by players for its ability to fit into niche Darkness-type strategies of the time.
