Where it came from
The Moltres card, identified as SWSH185 within the Sword & Shield Black Star Promos set, was released in early 2022. It was distributed specifically as part of the Galar Bird V Tin collection, which featured the legendary Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. This release served to highlight the unique visual direction of the Galarian variants, which diverged significantly from their original Kanto appearances to emphasize a more aggressive, stylized aesthetic in line with the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion.
The artwork for this promo card was illustrated by Naoki Saito, a prominent artist in the Pokémon Trading Card Game who is well-regarded for his dynamic use of color and expressive character poses. Saito designed the card to emphasize Moltres's Galarian form, utilizing a bold color palette of dark purples and bright, flickering flames to convey a sense of sinister power. The card was received positively by collectors for its distinct, high-contrast illustration style that departed from the traditional fire-bird imagery, cementing its place as a standout promotional item in the Sword & Shield era.
