Where it came from
The Moltres ex card, designated number 31 within the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2004 as part of the transition of the Pokémon Trading Card Game license from Wizards of the Coast to The Pokémon Company International. This specific promo card was made available to players and collectors primarily through the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion cycle, often distributed as an inclusion in specialized blister packs or store-exclusive merchandise to promote the then-new 'ex' mechanic.
The card features artwork by illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita, whose work is central to the visual identity of the early Pokémon TCG. Arita designed this card to emphasize the dynamic, legendary stature of Moltres, utilizing the distinct 'ex' card layout characterized by a holographic finish and an increased focus on powerful, stage-specific gameplay abilities. Upon release, the card was well-received for its playability and remains a notable piece of the mid-2000s era of the game.
