Where it came from
The Mudkip ★ card was released in 2004 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Team Rocket Returns. This set was notable for reintroducing the Team Rocket theme to the game, drawing inspiration from the original 2000 Team Rocket expansion. The card belongs to the 'Gold Star' series, a subset of rare, highly sought-after cards introduced during the EX era, which featured Pokémon illustrated with unique coloring that deviated from their standard designs.
This specific card features Mudkip in its shiny, or alternate-color, form. The illustration was handled by Masakazu Fukuda, a prolific artist in the TCG franchise known for a distinct, vibrant style. The release was part of a shift during the mid-2000s toward higher-rarity collectibles designed to appeal to both competitive players and long-term collectors, establishing the Gold Star cards as some of the most enduringly valuable pieces in the hobby.
