Provenance

Where it came from

The Muk card from the 2002 Legendary Collection was released by Wizards of the Coast as a retrospective compilation set. It brought together iconic illustrations from the original Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil expansions, featuring a distinct holographic 'reverse' pattern known as confetti foil. This reprint maintained the original artwork by Kagemaru Himeno, whose distinctive style defined much of the early Pokémon Trading Card Game aesthetic.

Originally debuting in the 1999 Fossil expansion, Muk was designed to showcase the Poison-type Pokémon’s sludge-covered, amorphous biology. Kagemaru Himeno’s illustrations for the early sets focused on placing the characters in their natural environments, and this piece captures Muk in a simple, direct composition that highlights its menacing presence. The Legendary Collection re-release is highly regarded by collectors for its unique frame and foil treatment, which serves as a nostalgic bridge to the earliest years of the hobby.
