Provenance

Where it came from

The Nidoqueen 12/130 card was released in 2000 as part of the Base Set 2 expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was specifically designed to re-release key cards from the original Base Set and Jungle expansion, providing players with continued access to popular cards after the initial print runs had become difficult to find. It served as a bridge for the burgeoning hobby, maintaining the core mechanics while consolidating iconic creatures for a new generation of trainers.

The illustration for this card was created by Atsuko Nishida, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the franchise. Nishida, who is also credited with the original character design for Pikachu, focused on rendering Nidoqueen with a fierce yet grounded aesthetic typical of the era's hand-drawn style. The holographic foil pattern, applied over the intricate grass-type artwork, was intended to elevate the card's status as a rare pull, helping it become a staple of the competitive play meta-game during the early years of the TCG.
