Provenance

Where it came from

Oshawott 27/114 was released as part of the initial Black & White expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which launched internationally in 2011. This set marked a significant transition in the game, introducing the Unova region and the fifth generation of Pokémon. As the Water-type starter for the region, Oshawott was designed by Ken Sugimori and his team at Game Freak to feature a distinctively Japanese-inspired aesthetic, incorporating elements of an otter with a sea shell, or 'scalchop,' integrated into its anatomy.

The card itself reflects the minimalist, clean design language that characterized the early Black & White era, moving toward larger illustrations that filled more of the card frame. The illustration by the artist TOKIYA emphasizes the character's playful, energetic nature, typical of the starter Pokémon in the franchise. While common in rarity, it remains a sentimental piece for many collectors as it represents the debut of the Unova starter trio in the trading card format.
