Provenance

Where it came from

Released in early 2000, Base Set 2 served as a strategic reprint collection for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, designed to maintain accessibility to essential cards for players following the exhaustion of the original Base Set and Jungle expansion supplies. The set compiled popular cards from these earlier releases into a single, cohesive product, identifiable by the distinct two-digit set numbering and the addition of the set symbol.

The Parasect card features the original illustrative work of Ken Sugimori, one of the primary architects of the Pokémon aesthetic. His design choice for Parasect emphasizes the character's biological connection to the parasitic mushroom on its back, rendered in the clean, watercolor-influenced style that defined the early era of the trading card game. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a functional, if standard, uncommon addition to the competitive landscape of the time.
