Provenance

Where it came from

The Poliwag card 87/144 was released in 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was the final release produced by Wizards of the Coast before The Pokémon Company took over direct operations. Skyridge is historically significant among collectors for being part of the e-Card series, which featured dot-code strips on the side of cards that could be scanned using the Nintendo Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral to unlock mini-games and Pokédex entries.

The card features artwork by Midori Harada, a prolific illustrator for the franchise known for a soft, painterly aesthetic. In this piece, Harada captures the Pokémon in a serene, natural environment, emphasizing the creature's aquatic roots. As a common card, it was widely available during its initial print run, but the Skyridge set eventually became highly sought after by collectors due to the conclusion of the Wizards of the Coast era and the relatively limited distribution of the set compared to earlier releases.
